Today we had two members from Illinois Right to Know GMO, a group dedicated to educating the public on genetically modified foods.

Whereas hybridization of food – combining parts of different plants or breeding select animals to gain desired changes – has been done by farmers for millennia, genetically modifying foods – using genetic engineering to specific changes into a plant or animal’s DNA – only began in the early 1990’s.  Since it started, however, the use of genetically modified foods has grown to dominate the food market.  Over 90% of corn and soybean products, for example, come from genetically modified plants.  Illinois Right to Know GMO is working to ensure that all food containing genetically modified ingredients are so labeled.
